Ask a Mixed Faith Couple

atheist husband

I have been a big fan of Rachel Held Evans's "Ask A..." series since its inception. I always enjoy reading through the questions and I have been consistently impressed by the answers given. So I'm really excited and a little bit nervous to be participating in the series with my atheist husband Jason (Because that's his primary job, right? Being an atheist?)! Excited because it's always an honor to talk about our marriage, nervous because there have been some pretty stellar entries in that series and it's kind of intimidating. Today you can head over to Rachel's blog and ask us the pressing questions that you've always wanted to know about being married to someone who doesn't share your belief system. The way this works is that you can ask questions and vote for your favorite questions … [Read more...]

Segment on HuffPost Live

atheist husband

Nothing like coming back from a huge trip and being asked to be on a panel discussion about interfaith marriage! Last night, I had the opportunity to join a panel discussion about interfaith relationships. I said "um" a lot. And admitted that Jason and I don't really argue very much about our faith differences, which probably bored everyone. Because a nice dose of drama is far more exciting than a couple of people who just get along and like each other. But I'm okay with boring. Goodness knows, I don't think my life could stand any ACTUAL drama. The stuff that I make up, like my terror of doing the segment at all, is plenty for me. To those of you who Tweeted and Facebooked your support for me yesterday, thank you so much. You are a gift. It's always a little scary to write or … [Read more...]

You Think You Know Me: The Response

A few weeks ago I invited you to ask me whatever you wanted to know about me. And you, true to form, asked me some interesting questions. While I'm off on vacation, I thought I'd give you this opportunity to get a slightly better glimpse inside my mind. Enjoy. Leanne S. asked:  If you could pick any three famous Canadians to have dinner with, who would you choose and what would the meal be? Me: Will Arnett (COME ON!), some Sutherland (I'm not too picky), & Justin Bieber (duh). We would eat soup (preferably cream based), because that's what I like. Leanne S. also asked: If you could move your family anywhere for a year and you could write, where would you go? Let's assume you'd get a free house and a stipend for a year so $ would not be an issue. Me: Probably Vermont. … [Read more...]

Interview with Shawn Smucker

Regular readers of this blog will remember Shawn Smucker, author of My Amish Roots, from his guest posts in February and in August, not to mention his numerous appearances in my Stuff I've Been Reading round-ups. Shawn is a remarkably talented and thoughtful writer and he is a smart and funny friend. And while I find his taste in cereal questionable, I can overlook that because he wrote one of my all-time most favorite essays on the internet. When Shawn said that he was releasing a book about his Amish heritage, I was excited to read it, even though I have an uneasy relationship with both non-fiction and history. Of course, Shawn did not disappoint. He is a beautiful story-teller and this book was no exception. Shawn weaves his own story into that of his ancestors and in so doing, shows the … [Read more...]

Interview with Knox McCoy

Back in April, I had the distinct pleasure of being asked to be a part of Awesometown over at Knox McCoy's blog. Now, I'm probably one of the oldest members of Awesometown and it's just a bit too noisy for me, so I summer over here in Prodigiousburgh (with the H because why stop at G?). Still a resident of Awesometown, but without riff-raff like Tamara Out Loud.Anyway, Knox has taken a moment away from his brand new baby girl to stop by Prodigiousburgh today and talk about his delightfully funny and surprisingly insightful book, Jesus and The Bachelorette: Finding Christ Among Roses, Tanned Bodies and Hyperbole. Because the man has to pay the bills.+++++++++++++++ Alise Wright: First, my maiden name is McCoy. What are the odds that you and I are related?Knox McCoy: One thousand … [Read more...]

Podcast with AgnosticRadio

I'm still a little bit amazed by the interesting people that I meet and the fascinating things I get to do around this big old internets. I love that I'm able to connect with so many folks from such divergent walks of life. Honestly, I don't think I'll ever get tired of it.This weekend, Jason and I had the opportunity to interview with J.G. over at Agnostic Radio for their weekly podcast. A few months ago they announced that they were looking for couples where one person was religious and the other was not to interview and my friend  The Agnostic Wife mentioned to them that Jason and I fit that description. We got in touch and after our schedules FINALLY synced up, we were able to sit down and do an interview. This is our first time talking about our marriage out in public together, so … [Read more...]
